In the heart of the red desert, where the sky touches the earth in a soft embrace and time flows with the rhythm of the wind, there lies the sacred Dreaming of the Yam. It is a tale passed through the generations—painted not in words alone, but in dots of colour, in rhythm, in silence.
Long ago, the Ancestors danced across the land, their footsteps shaping the hills, rivers, and sacred yam fields. One Ancestor, a woman known as Warlpiri, carried with her the knowledge of the yam—how it grows hidden beneath the earth, how it feeds, and how it connects all beings to the land.
Each dot in this painting is a mark of her journey. The red tells of the earth—warm and generous. The green shows where the yams hide, deep and strong, nourished by unseen waters. The blue sings of the sky spirits, who watched and guided Warlpiri’s path. And the white, like breath on the wind, is the peace of the land when balance is kept.
The women gather, their laughter like birdsong, their hands brushing over the soil, uncovering the yams with care. This gathering is not just survival—it is ceremony, connection, memory. The dots swirl and overlap, just like the stories and voices of those who came before.
“Yam Dreaming” is not only a story—it is a living memory of abundance, of respect for Country, and of deep, colourful peace.
